[ES]En América latina y el Caribe, el turismo es una actividad ya consolidada, cuyo crecimiento y gran dinamismo lo sitúa como uno de los fenómenos sociales y económicos más destacados del siglo pasado. De hecho, los organismos financieros internacionales han financiado la puesta en marcha de multitud de proyectos turísticos en esta región con el fin de conseguir sus objetivos de reducción de la pobreza y mejora de la calidad de vida en los países menos avanzados. El objetivo de esta investigación es evaluar el papel ejercido por los organismos financieros internacionales en la financiación del turismo en América Latina y el Caribe. Se demuestra que estos organismos cometen importantes errores en el tratamiento que dan a la financiación del turismo, lo que les dificulta aprovechar todo el potencial de esta actividad económica para la consecución de sus objetivos. Además, esta financiación no responde a un planteamiento estratégico de inclusión financiera, por lo que difícilmente va a servir para transformar al turismo en un instrumento de desarrollo sostenible.

[EN]In Latin America and the Caribbean, tourism is a consolidated activity, whose growth and high dynamism have made it one of the most remarkable economic and social phenomena of the past century. Indeed, international financial institutions have financed the launching of a large number of tourism projects in the region aimed at achieving their goals of poverty reduction and quality of life improvement in the least developed countries. The objective of this research is to assess the role played by international financial institutions in the financing of tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is shown that these organizations make significant errors in their treatment of tourism financing, which make it difficult for them to realize the full potential of this economic activity to achieve their goals. In addition, this financing does not respond to a strategic approach to financial inclusion, so it will hardly serve to transform tourism into an instrument of sustainable development.
